World Cup Trip To Boston and Martha’s Vineyard
Whether you call the beautiful game “football” or “soccer”, supporters from around the globe will be arriving in North America in the summer of 2026 to cheer on their respective countries in the Football World Cup. A perfect opportunity to bundle sports fun with a World Cup vacation!
The World Cup takes place every four years and usually involves England getting beaten by Germany on penalties in the quarter-final and either Brazil, Germany or Italy walking away with the trophy. But those two inevitabilities aside the tournament is bound to be full of incredible matches and plenty of drama.
There will be 48 different countries competing with teams from 6 of the 7 continents represented. The Australian “socceroos” have already qualified but unfortunately the penguins in Antarctica are yet to master the finer details of the game and won’t be making the trip. Matches are scheduled to be played between June 11th and July 19th.
16 cities across the US, Canada and Mexico will host matches with 4 of them located in the North-East; New York, Boston, Philadelphia and Toronto. Seven matches have been scheduled for Gillette Stadium in Boston.
Matches taking place in Boston are on the following dates:
- June 13th Group Stage
- June 16th Group Stage
- June 19th Group Stage
- June 23rd Group Stage
- June 26th Group Stage
- June 29th Round of 32
- July 9th Quarter Final
The draw will be made in December 2025 and tickets will go on sale at a similar time from FIFA.com
The proximity of the 4 north-eastern cities to each other provides the perfect opportunity to take in some football (aka soccer) and do a scenic tour of this idyllic and historic corner of the USA. Gillette Stadium is in a very central location in relation to the venues and is less than a 4 hour drive from New York City, 5 hours from Philadelphia, 8 hours from Toronto and only 1 hour from the ferry terminal at Woods Hole where you can catch the ferry across to beautiful Martha’s Vineyard, a must-see destination for visitors to the US.
World Cup 2026 Travel Ideas
A possible itinerary would be to fly into Toronto, catch a match on June 12th then head down to Niagara Falls for a day or two before driving on to Boston. Attend the June 16th and June 19th games in Boston and then travel to Martha’s Vineyard for a relaxing three-day New England vacation at the Nobnocket, the top Martha’s Vineyard Boutique Hotel. With batteries recharged you can then drive on to Philadelphia for games on June 25th and 27th before heading on to New York for matches on June 30th and July 5th.
Alternatively simply stay around Boston for all the games there and do side trips to the top New England travel spots such as Martha’s Vineyard, Nantucket, Newport, Arcadia, Portland, Salem and the White Mountains.
World Cup Glossary of Terms
- Games are called “matches” not games. Playing games are what Italians do when they’re tackled.
- Matches are played on “pitches” not fields. Fields are for grazing livestock.
- Impressive “tackle” is removing the ball cleanly from an opponent and has nothing to do with fishing or your wedding night
- “Nutmeg” is passing the ball through an opponent’s legs and not a baking suggestion
- “He’s hit the bar” means a shot has struck the upper woodwork of the goal and not that a player has nipped off for a swift beer
- If a team doesn’t score a goal then their score is “nil” not zero. Zero is only used when discussing the probability of England winning the tournament
- “False nine” is a center-forward who plays in a deeper than typical position and not a reference to a player’s upper set of dentures
- The “box” is the rectangular area in front of the two goals and not where you’ll see Taylor Swift hanging out
- “Injury time” is extra time added at end of each half in order to make up for the time taken up by Italians and Argentinians rolling around on the pitch as if they’ve had their legs severed
- “Extra time” is extra time added on in the knock-out portion of the competition if there is no winning team after 90 minutes. It is typically a drawn out prelude to England being beaten on penalties.
Nobnocket will have a “World Cup 2026 – Visit Martha’s Vineyard” package to welcome travelling fans to the scenic island of Martha’s Vineyard. Check in with our website or sign up to our newsletter for details.
Safe travels.
